When our social media feeds are filled with old grainy, tinted or blurry images, it must be a Thursday. Once a week, social media enthusiasts get nostalgic by posting old images and tagging #TBT (Throwback Thursday). The hashtag has now penetrated almost all social media platforms. But how can you as a brand use this to your advantage?
What is #TBT?
#TBT or #ThrowbackThursday came about in early 2006 on a blog that used this as a title for a series of retro cartoon character art. Typically users post old images either of themselves or something they remember while using the hashtag.
Initially the hashtag was used on Twitter by a mom in 2007 by posting photos of her baby. A year later, a woman used the same hashtag while reminiscing about a Lil’ Kim video. The first use of #TBT on Instagram was by @bobbysanders22 in February 2011 with an image of Hot Wheels toy cars.
There is something about reminiscing about the “good ol days” that have caught on turning #TBT into an internet sensation.
Most social media users use #TBT when sharing a “What was I thinking?” moment, the hashtag has become one of the most popular to be used on Instagram.
Much to the surprise of many, using #TBT has its own set of rules if you may. It is simple enough to follow even if you are new to social media.
1. Thursdays Only – Considering it is #ThrowbackThursday , it is a no brainer that you should only post using this hashtag on a Thursday. Yes #FlashbakFriday exists but is only used by those who forget to go back in time on a Thursday.
2. Don’t forget to tag – Your posts should ideally have either #TBT or #ThrowbackThursday. Just remember, your post won’t count if you forget to include these hashtags.
3. Old is Gold – Last weeks’ images do not count as a #TBT. It has to be old. The best photos shared are the ones taken before the internet was the in thing.
4. Once a week – Given that there in only one Thursday a week, it is best to keep you #TBT’s to that.
Branding with #TBT
How can you integrate #TBT into your brands social media strategy? It is easy if your brand has history and a photo bank to match. If you are a newer brand, don’t fret practice creative thinking and use #TBT to your advantage.
From sharing blueprints to what the building or area looked like before you took over is a great way to participate in #TBT . You can also widen your options by sharing pictures of the town or city you are in.
Your employees are the people that make the company. Have some fun “behind the scenes” by sharing old photos of your employees be it from when they first started working with you or from their teenage years. It’s always fun to get everyone involved.
Where will your brand be if it wasn’t for your customers? Get them involved as well by sharing previous images of your customers at your store, interacting with your sales people and using your products. The best part is finding photos of your loyal customers from years ago that still use your products.
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box if your product is relatively new and you are looking to participate in a #TBT. For example if you’re an e-book reader, share pictures of old physical books that you have available.
Ads from back in the day are interesting and at times funny when compared to what is produced nowadays. From tv ad snippets to old posters the possibilities are endless.
A great way to create brand awareness if you are a new brans id to go back in time on a particular day. This day in history is perfect for you to connect with your audience sharing snippets of events that took place previously on the same date.
